What Makes a Strong Review? On Writing for IJFAB

I’m excited to step into the role of Book Review Editor at the International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics (IJFAB). In this role, I’ll be working with contributors to develop thoughtful, engaging reviews and helping to shape the book review section as an active site of scholarly conversation. I’m especially looking forward to connecting with readers and reviewers across the IJFAB community and beyond, and I warmly invite those interested in reviewing to get in touch.

I’ve long been drawn to book reviews not simply as a way of deciding what to read, but as a way of encountering a text through another reader’s perspective. A strong review does more than summarize or evaluate; it interprets, situates, and opens up the book in ways that invite further thought and engagement. At their best, book reviews make visible what is at stake in a work, clarify its contributions, and create space for readers to think with it, rather than merely about it.



Why Book Reviews Matter

Book reviews play an important role in shaping scholarly conversations. They offer a space for engaging with new work in a way that is both rigorous and accessible, creating entry points into ongoing debates while also bringing new perspectives into view. In this sense, reviews are not peripheral to academic work but part of how fields develop through interpretation, critique, and dialogue.

Within IJFAB, this role is especially significant. As a journal grounded in feminist approaches to bioethics, IJFAB brings together interdisciplinary scholarship that engages questions of embodiment, power, and lived experience across a range of clinical, social, and political contexts. Book reviews contribute to this project by situating texts within these broader conversations, highlighting their stakes, and opening them up to critical engagement across disciplinary boundaries.


What We Are Looking For in a Book Review

Book reviews at IJFAB aim to do more than summarize a text or offer a simple evaluation. They are an opportunity to engage with work thoughtfully and critically, situating it within broader conversations while remaining attentive to its particular contributions. What follows are a few guiding considerations for prospective reviewers.


A. Core Aim

A strong book review moves beyond summary and beyond evaluation alone. It offers an engaged and situated reading of the text, one that clarifies the book’s central claims, interprets its contributions, and reflects on what it makes visible and what it leaves open. The goal is not to exhaustively cover every aspect of the book, but to bring its most important stakes into focus in a way that invites further thought and discussion.


B. Tone & Style

Reviews should be clear and accessible while remaining intellectually rigorous. IJFAB’s interdisciplinary readership means that writing should avoid unnecessary jargon and remain clear without sacrificing nuance. At the same time, strong reviews are both generous and critical: they take the author’s arguments seriously, represent them fairly, and engage them with care, even where they raise questions or concerns.


C. Audience Awareness

Because IJFAB brings together scholars from a range of disciplines, book reviews should be written with a broad audience in mind. Not all readers will be specialists in the subfield addressed by the book under review, so it is important to provide sufficient context to make the work intelligible and relevant. This includes briefly situating the book within its field and clarifying why it matters for readers across different areas of feminist bioethics and related disciplines.



Anatomy of a Strong Book Review

A strong book review typically unfolds through a series of moves that help orient the reader, engage the text, and clarify its significance. While there is no single formula, the following elements are often present in effective reviews.


A. Opening Move

A review usually begins by introducing the book and situating it within its broader context. This may include identifying the field or conversation the book contributes to, as well as the questions or problems it takes up. A strong opening helps the reader understand why the book matters and what is at stake from the outset.


B. Concise Overview

After this initial framing, the review should offer a concise account of what the book does. Rather than providing a chapter-by-chapter summary, this approach involves identifying the central argument, key themes, and the work's overall contribution. The aim is to give readers a clear sense of the book’s project without getting lost in detail.


C. Critical Engagement

A strong review engages the book critically and constructively. This includes highlighting its strengths and raising questions about its limitations, tensions, or areas that may benefit from further development. Critical engagement should be grounded in a careful and charitable reading of the text, ensuring that critique emerges from understanding rather than dismissal.


D. Situating the Book

In addition to engaging the book on its own terms, a review should situate it within relevant scholarly and practical contexts. This may involve connecting it to existing literature, ongoing debates, or broader clinical, social, and political concerns. Doing so helps clarify the book’s contribution and relevance beyond its immediate scope.


E. Closing Move

Finally, a strong review offers a clear sense of the book’s overall significance. This may include reflecting on who the book will be most valuable for and what it contributes to its field. A thoughtful closing helps bring the review together and leaves the reader with a clear understanding of the book’s place within ongoing conversations.


Example Moves

There are some concrete ways to approach different parts of a review:


Framing the Opening

  • Instead of beginning with a general description, try situating the book within a broader question, debate, or tension it addresses.

  • You might open by identifying what is at stake in the book’s intervention, what problem it takes up, or what conversation it enters.

  • A strong opening can also briefly indicate why the book matters now, especially in relation to ongoing clinical, social, or political concerns.


Moving Beyond Chapter-by-Chapter Summary

  • Rather than summarizing each chapter in sequence, focus on the book’s central argument and how its key claims develop across the text.

  • Identify 2–3 core themes or contributions and use those to organize your overview.

  • When discussing specific chapters, do so selectively and in service of clarifying the book’s overall project.


Developing Critical Engagement

  • Instead of offering general praise or criticism, focus on specific aspects of the book, an argument, a conceptual move, or a methodological choice.

  • You might draw out a tension or question that emerges from the text and explore its implications.

  • Consider what the book does particularly well, and where its approach may leave certain issues underexplored.

  • Frame critique in a way that builds on an accurate and charitable understanding of the author’s aims.


Situating the Book

  • Connect the book to existing literature or debates, noting where it aligns with or diverges from other work in the field.

  • You might highlight how the book contributes to conversations in feminist bioethics or speaks to issues in clinical practice, policy, or social life.

  • Consider whether the book brings new perspectives into view or reframes familiar questions in a productive way.


Crafting the Closing

  • Instead of ending with a general summary, reflect on who the book will be most valuable for and why.

  • You might highlight what the book contributes to its field or what kinds of questions it opens for further exploration.

  • A strong closing can return to the stakes identified at the beginning, bringing the review full circle.



Common Pitfalls to Avoid

There are a few common pitfalls that reviewers, especially those new to the genre, may encounter. Being mindful of these can help ensure that a review remains clear, engaging, and analytically strong.

One frequent challenge is over-summary. While it is important to give readers a sense of the book’s content, a review that moves chapter by chapter without synthesis can lose sight of the book’s central argument and broader significance. A related issue is treating the review as purely evaluative, offering judgments about whether a book is “good” or “bad” without explaining why or without engaging its arguments in a substantive way.

Another common difficulty is a lack of context. Reviews that do not situate the book within its field or relevant debates may make it harder for readers to understand what is at stake or why the work matters. Similarly, framing a review too narrowly, assuming a highly specialized audience, or focusing on a very specific concern without broader orientation, can limit its accessibility, especially given IJFAB’s interdisciplinary readership.

Finally, a strong critique requires careful and charitable reading. Reviews that move too quickly to criticism without first demonstrating a clear understanding of the author’s project risk misrepresenting the work or overlooking its contributions. Taking the time to engage a text on its own terms helps ensure that the critique is both fair and intellectually productive.

What Makes a Review Stand Out

What distinguishes a strong review from an excellent one is often a matter of clarity, insight, and framing. Reviews that stand out tend to do more than accurately present a book’s arguments; they offer a clear sense of what is at stake, why the work matters, and how it contributes to ongoing conversations. This may involve drawing out an underlying tension, highlighting a particularly generative idea, or situating the book in a way that brings its significance into sharper focus. Strong reviews are also marked by precision and fairness: they represent the author’s work accurately while offering a thoughtful, well-grounded critique. Above all, they engage the book in a way that moves the conversation forward, opening up new questions or perspectives rather than simply closing it down.


Reviewing as Scholarly Engagement

At a broader level, strong book reviews reflect a particular orientation toward scholarly engagement. They move beyond evaluation alone, treating interpretation as a central task: not only identifying what a book argues, but clarifying how it frames its questions, what it brings into view, and what it leaves open. In this sense, reviewing is not simply a matter of assessment, but a form of participation in an ongoing conversation that requires attentiveness to context, stakes, and audience. This also means approaching critique as a mode of engagement rather than dismissal. Careful reviews aim to represent a work on its own terms, while still making space for questioning, tension, and disagreement. Such engagement calls for both generosity and precision: generosity in taking a text seriously, and precision in articulating where and how its contributions succeed or fall short. More broadly, reviewing carries a kind of epistemic responsibility:  to read carefully, to interpret responsibly, and to contribute in ways that extend rather than foreclose dialogue. At their best, book reviews do not simply close with a verdict but open pathways for further thought, inviting readers into deeper, more sustained engagement with the work.


Practical Submission Tips

If you are interested in contributing a book review to IJFAB, a few practical points may be helpful. Reviews typically follow the journal’s general formatting and citation style and are kept within a word count appropriate to the genre. Prospective reviewers are welcome to reach out with expressions of interest, whether in response to available titles or to suggest books they would like to review. Unsolicited inquiries are encouraged, particularly where a reviewer can speak to the book’s relevance for IJFAB’s interdisciplinary audience. Timelines are arranged on a case-by-case basis to support both timely publication and thoughtful engagement with the text.
